The Craignair Inn & Causeway Restaurant

  : The Craignair Inn by the Sea is an "old world" inn in a remote and interesting coastal area of Spruce Head, Maine. Constructed in 1927-1930 it served as housing for the local quarry workers on Clark Island and became an inn in 1947. It sits at the head of the causeway over to Clark Island which is a nature preserve owned by the Maine Heritage Coast Trust. The inn is like a big lodge and has a restaurant called "The Causeway" which serves dinner and closed on Mon-Tues, two of our nights there. We booked a "King Superior Suite with Ocean View and got a very pleasant "end of the house/corner suite with a bedroom, bathroom and sitting room. It was sparsely furnished, which we like, and had a small refrigerator and expresso machine (which we don't like) instead of a Keurig. All of the rooms had windows with screens and there was no A/C. We loved having the fresh air and our ocean view overlooked the causeway and Clark Island. It was very pleasant. There was a ceiling fan but it made so much noise that we didn't use it. There was, also, a smaller fan that we did not have to use because of cooler temperatures and having our screen windows open. The bathroom was small and the toilet was very low with very little leg room between it and the shower. Taller guests have to be "side-sitters." There is a breakfast selection sheet that you fill out each day with a variety of choices. There are not meat choices for breakfast. The homemade biscuits are very dense and don't toast up well so you have crispy on the outside and doughy on the inside. Eggs come poached, scrambled or fried and served on a couple of pieces of lettuce. Blueberry pancakes were good. Oatmeal was thick and filling. Plain yogurt wasn't offered with any fruit but we asked for blueberries and it was much better than without them. Greg and Lauren are nice innkeepers. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here very much and would not hesitate to return again.
  : Noisy ceiling fan that rendered it unusable. Very low sitting toilet. Expresso maker in room instead of a Keurig and no decaf option.

  : Breakfast simple but wholesome and delicious. Dinner the night before was spectacular. We would go back again just for dinner alone. Chef Gil's menu was so tasty.

  : The remoteness and serenity of the Clark Island and the Inn, as we generally select outside of downtown area's. No A/C was an initial concern, however, the weather faired in our favor, and it really was not a concern for our 4 night August stay. Comfortable bedding, a Nespresso machine, and a fridge, nice touch, a sound machine/masker was helpful, thanks!
  : The stairs are rather short and "steep", not so noticeable going up to the 3rd floor, however, coming down the steep stairs with any type of luggage is another story. There is one wall banister to hold onto, consideration to "add another wall banister" to hold onto for balance would be helpful. Consider adding a small microwave in the 3rd floor king suite, (its big enough) to reheat versus going down to the community 2nd floor and a modest T.V. would of been appreciated in the sitting room. We did not find it "quiet" as all of our room windows were directly adjacent to the kitchen/cooktop venting, (looks like your turbine venting on your home's rooftop) it emits a loud audible sound that starts up 1rst thing in the morning, you will hear the "vent" running in the morning and all thru the evening as well.

  : Beautiful location, nice rooms, easy to find and park!
  : Wish I would have paid closer attention to which bedrooms had attached bathrooms, rather than down the hall. Was fine for the off season but wouldn't want to deal with that when busy or with family. Check restaurant hours before arriving!

  : Only issue, for room without an on-site, the bathroom is at the other end of the hallway.
